Here are some useful video recordings from the lab.

Magnet Movies

Sham Exposure: normal behavior of an untreated rat (i.e. no circling) (3.6 Mb)

This video shows the normal behavior of a rat in an open field after 30-min restraint (but not exposed to a magnetic field.) The rat explores the test cage, rears a few times, but does not walk in circles.

Circling (Counterclockwise): Rat after 30 min head-up in 14T magnet (9 Mb)

After 30-min restraint within a 14T magnet with their head up (i.e. towards +B), rats walk in tight counter-clockwise circles for up to 3 minutes. Not every rat circles, and the number of circles is variable, but the longer the duration of exposure and the higher the field strength, the greater the average number of circles. Also, when they circle, all rats exposed with their head up (towards +B) walk in counter clockwise circles.

Circling (Clockwise): Rat after 30 min head-down in 14T magnet (9 Mb)

When the rats are exposed to the magnet field with their head down (i.e. towards -B), they circle clockwise. We have found the same result when the magnetic field orientation is reversed using the large resistive magnet at the Magnet Lab. In otherwords, the direction of circling reverses due to the relative orientation of the field, and not the fact that the rats were upside-down .

Circling Mouse: A mouse after 30 min restraint head-up in 14T magnet (13 Mb)

Rat Swim Test: A rat swimming after exposure to the 14T magnet (15.5 Mb)

Mouse Swim Test: A mouse swimming after 14T exposure, demonstrating computerized motion tracking (2.6 Mb)

Ladder Rat (Training & Magnet): climbing the ladder first outside the magnet, then into the magnet (7.1 Mb)

Ladder Rat:Just climbing into the magnet (4.5 Mb)

Labryinthectomy Validation: Sham and biLBX rats tested upside-down. (12 Mb)

Paw Tracking Rat: Detection of walking patterns in labyrinthectomized rat (1.6 Mb)

Head Movements in Magnet: head movements of a rat within a 14T magnet; note that this was recorded via mirror, so left/right are reversed. (35 Mb)

Utricular Mutants: example locomotor behavior of wild-type mouse after sham or 14 T magnet exposure, followed by a het (head-tilt) mouse and a tlt (tilted) mouse after 14 T exposure. Although both mutants lack otoconia, het mice do not circle after magnet exposure, but tlt mice do circle. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7884035
